Vincent Pontare and Salem Al Fakir — aka Vargas & Lagola — are premiering their upcoming debut album’s second and final single, “Somebody That Understands Me,” exclusively on Billboard Dance today (Jan. 9).
The ‘80s-rock-inspired track rings with heartfelt lyrics about finally finding people who appreciates you because of — or maybe even despite — your unique idiosyncrasies. But the emotion really jumps out in all its dramatic glory via a wailing, extended guitar solo by producer and composer Ludwig Göransson, whose work includes Childish Gambino single “This is America,” and music for Black Panther and The Mandalorian.
“We wanted to make a classic 12-string rock ballad in our own way,” Vargas & Lagola said of the track. “The plan that day was actually to write a song for Post Malone, but when we started with the guitar riff we got a bit carried away and it took a whole other direction.”
For much of their careers, the Swedish duo worked behind the scenes as songwriters and producers for artists such as Avicii, Madonna, Katy Perry, David Guetta and Swedish House Mafia. In 2017, they began making their own music together, and with two years’ worth of singles under their belt, they’ve leveled up with the impending release of their debut album (out Jan. 31).
